Save the date : Seventh CBFP Council Meeting

 

 

Dear Partner,

The Kingdom of Belgium Facilitation of the Congo Basin Forest Partnership (CBFP) is pleased to announce the Seventh CBFP Council Meeting scheduled for 19 December 2019 in Douala, Cameroon.

 

 

Alongside this event, the Expert meeting will be held from 16 to 17 December 2019 to follow-up on the International Conference on Security, Poaching, Monitoring Transhumance and Armed Groups circulating between the Sahel and Equatorial Africa. The expert meeting is expected to move forward with the effective implementation of the recommendations of the N'Djamena international conference of ministers held from 23 to 25 January 2019.  It will focus on developing logical frameworks and programmatic proposals for each bloc and will establish a regional mechanism to monitor and guide policy on interactions between security - protected areas - pastoralism.  The countries concerned are: Cameroon, Niger, Nigeria, Central African Republic, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Sudan, South Sudan and Chad. Regional organizations and technical and financial partners concerned with wildlife conservation and anti-poaching issues will also participate.

 

 

The expert meeting will be followed on 18 December 2019 by a CBFP Civil Society Day organized by the College's Leaders, and entitled: "Congo Basin forests at the crossroads between Conservation - Sustainable Management and Investments in the Forest Environment: Civil society’s role and local communities’ expectations”.

Meeting of Experts for the follow-up of the N'Djamena conference - Douala, Republic of Cameroon - Information note of the technical meeting of experts - 16-17 December 2019

The meetings will be organized with the financial and technical support of the Consortium of the CBFP Facilitation of the Kingdom of the Belgium comprising the German Ministry of Cooperation and Development (BMZ), the European Union (DEVCO) and the Kingdom of Belgium. The seventh Council Meeting will close with the handover of the CBFP from the Kingdom of Belgium (outgoing) to the Federal Republic of Germany (incoming).

RFUK-DEBATE: “DRIVERS OF DEFORESTATION: ARE WE ON THE RIGHT TRACK”?

Efforts to conserve forests, such as through REDD in DRC and the wider Congo Basin, are largely premised  on increasingly contested deforestation analyses that point to subsistence ‘slash and burn‘ agriculture and charcoal production as the main underlying drivers of deforestation. Meanwhile, community forestry  and similar  approaches to forest protection that have proven effective elsewhere in the tropics have been largely peripheral.
