Established in September 2002 at the Johannesburg World Summit on Sustainable Development (WSSD), the Congo Basin Forest Partnership (CBFP) currently has over 75 members representing the ten COMIFAC countries as well as donor countries, technical and financial partners, international organizations and non-governmental organizations, representatives of the private sector, universities and research organizations. These partners are united in their efforts to harmonize and coordinate support for the effective implementation of the COMIFAC Convergence Plan to assure forest sustainability in Central Africa. This collaboration is characterized as a type II partnership as opposed to "type I" intergovernmental partnerships exemplified by COMIFAC.

The CBFP represents a platform, a network, and a forum for non-binding dialogue, with priorities agreed upon amicably between governments, the private sector, civil society and development partners. Its overarching goal is to "enhance the effectiveness of technical and financial contributions in promoting conservation, sustainable management of forest ecosystems and poverty reduction in Central African countries."
